The Utilihab platform can employ a variety of foundations but generally does not employ foundations creating basement spaces. For both practical reasons of construction simplicity and for environmental reasons, the platform prefers the use of pre-fabricated pier foundation modules or poured in place slab foundations. Slabs are particularly useful for the Utilihab Pavilion variant of the basic Primary framing system.
A key precept of Utilihab design is that there is no such thing as permanence in the contemporary built habitat. Not only must practical architecture accommodate free evolution in response to its inhabitants’ changing needs, it must address a physical evolution of communities as a whole and the eventual reformation of the built habitat in response to the needs of the environment. The root of this flexibility lays in the technology of foundations, and so Utilihab favors those foundation forms that are modular or at least minimalist in construction.
