The basic recessed ceiling down-lighting unit is a conventional flush or fitted ceiling panel that fits within the standard ceiling grid. It features a pre-finished cover panel in surface material matching or complimentary other ceiling panels with a bezel and enclosure for the recessed lighting unit which may optionally be independently mounted by alloy angles to the ceiling grid profiles. It may feature a center-mounted lighting unit of may have the unit positioned toward one side or to a corner.

LED variants of this form of lighting may employ several integral recessed lighting units, owing to the smaller size and light output of individual LED lighting modules.
